Key Hybrid Fitness Strategies: Culture & Continuing Education

WEXER BLOG

One of the most transformative changes in recent years involve how hybrid fitness strategies are evoloving and blending online and in-person fitness experiences. Hybrid models are redefining how fitness professionals engage with clients and how consumers access fitness services.

In a recent episode of the Wexer podcast, Paul Bowman, CEO of Wexer, spoke with Amy Thompson, CEO of IDEA Health and Fitness Association, to discuss how the hybrid fitness model is shaping the future of fitness. Their conversation provided valuable insights into industry trends, challenges, and opportunities for fitness professionals and business operators.

What is the Hybrid Fitness Model?

The hybrid fitness model refers to a fitness approach that combines virtual and physical training experiences. This model allows fitness professionals to offer services both online and in-person, expanding their reach beyond geographical boundaries. According to Amy Thompson, this shift allows trainers to move from an employee mindset to a business-owner perspective, offering flexibility and broader impact.

During the podcast, Thompson noted that fitness professionals are no longer confined to working exclusively in brick-and-mortar gyms. Instead, they are using online platforms to complement their in-person training sessions. This hybrid approach enables professionals to serve clients locally while also engaging with a global audience.

How the Hybrid Fitness Model is Changing Fitness Professionals’ Roles

The hybrid fitness model has fundamentally changed how fitness professionals view their roles. Thompson explained that many trainers are now thinking of themselves as independent business owners who can work across multiple platforms. This represents a significant shift from the traditional model, where fitness professionals viewed themselves primarily as employees of gyms or fitness clubs.

One major advantage of the hybrid model is flexibility. Fitness professionals can fill downtime by offering online classes, allowing them to maintain a consistent income stream. Additionally, this model provides an opportunity for professionals to increase their reach and impact, serving clients both locally and globally. Thompson emphasized that many fitness professionals entered the field to make a difference in people’s lives, and the hybrid model allows them to expand that impact significantly.

Thompson also stressed the importance of ethical practices, stating, “Professionals should always operate from the highest ethics and standards.” This means ensuring that fitness professionals respect the business of the clubs they work with while maintaining their independence and integrity.

Growing Consumer Demand for Hybrid Fitness Experiences

Consumer behavior has also evolved, with a growing demand for hybrid fitness experiences. According to Bowman, Wexer’s data shows that consumers increasingly engage with both online and physical fitness offerings. This dual engagement often leads to higher retention rates, as clients who access digital content are more likely to participate in in-person classes.

Thompson pointed out that online classes can act as a gateway for consumers to become more comfortable with in-person workouts. Virtual fitness options provide a low-barrier entry point for beginners, allowing them to build confidence before joining a physical gym environment. This hybrid approach not only meets diverse consumer needs but also strengthens the connection between digital and physical fitness experiences.

Thompson highlighted two critical factors influencing membership decisions: “Proximity and group fitness class schedule are the top two reasons for membership.” By offering a well-structured hybrid model, fitness operators can cater to these priorities while providing additional flexibility through digital options.

Challenges and Opportunities in Implementing a Hybrid Fitness Model

While the hybrid fitness model offers numerous benefits, it also presents challenges for fitness professionals and business operators.

Instructor Burnout And Turnover

One key issue is instructor burnout. As professionals juggle both online and in-person responsibilities, maintaining a sustainable work-life balance becomes crucial.

Thompson highlighted the importance of fostering a positive workplace culture to retain talent. By creating an environment where fitness professionals feel valued and supported, operators can reduce turnover and enhance member satisfaction. Offering competitive pay and investing in ongoing education can help keep fitness professionals motivated and engaged. IDEA Health and Fitness Association has reintroduced their business membership program to provide operators with the tools and resources to support their teams.

Instructor and Client Loyalty

Another challenge is maintaining client loyalty. Some gym owners worry that allowing instructors to build an online presence may lead to clients following them outside the gym. Thompson emphasized the need for clear ethical standards to prevent client poaching while encouraging operators to create a culture that makes both staff and members want to stay.

“It can be difficult to find great people, so when you do, hold on to them because they are ambassadors for your brand.”

Hybrid Fitness Strategies To Future-Proof Business

To stay competitive, fitness operators must embrace the hybrid fitness model and continually adapt their offerings. Thompson recommended analyzing class schedules regularly to ensure they meet the needs of both current and prospective members. This includes offering a diverse range of classes and hiring instructors who represent the community.

“Not everyone is drawn to the same type of instructor. Diversifying your talent will help to diversify your membership. By bringing in instructors from various backgrounds and teaching styles, operators can appeal to a broader audience and foster a more inclusive environment.”

Investing in a dedicated group fitness manager can also enhance programming quality. Many operators eliminated this role during recent financial downturns, but Thompson argued that bringing it back is crucial for building a compelling class schedule that drives member retention.

Thompson shared that IDEA is focusing on building stronger connections between the fitness and medical communities. By fostering collaboration, they aim to position fitness professionals as key players in preventive healthcare.
